Ethiopia COVID-19 Emergency Response Project

UI Design Evolution

News Details

The project involves constructing a Vaccine Laboratory Complex on a 10,500 m˛ plot in Akaki-Kality Sub-City, Addis Ababa, owned by the Ministry of Health. Financed by the World Bank under the Ethiopia COVID-19 Emergency Response Project (P17375) and implemented by the FDRE Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA), the facility will serve as a national regulator training and quality assurance center for vaccines, food, medicines, and medical devices. The ESIA, prepared by Basal Consulting, assesses environmental and social risks across construction and operation phases—including hazardous waste, wastewater, and incineration—and proposes mitigation measures in line with Ethiopian law, World Bank ESS, and WHO biosafety guidelines, while strengthening Ethiopia's regulatory capacity and public health protection.

The Skeuomorphic Era

Skeuomorphic Design Example
Early iOS design showcasing skeuomorphic elements

Skeuomorphic design dominated the early years of digital interfaces, attempting to mirror real-world objects in digital form. This approach helped users transition from physical to digital interactions through familiar visual metaphors.

As users became more comfortable with digital interfaces, design began moving towards simplification. Flat design emerged as a reaction to the ornate details of skeuomorphism, emphasizing clarity and efficiency.
